Campaign Finance Random Examination Report

In accordance with requirements of the New Mexico Campaign Reporting Act, the Office of the Secretary of State (SOS) is required to conduct a thorough examination of a random sampling of reports filed by candidate and political committees that disclose contributions and expenditures of the campaign.  The examination seeks to identify discrepancies such as:

  1. Political committees who have not registered with the SOS.
  2. Contributions which exceed allowable contribution limits.
  3. Expenditures of campaign funds that may not be permissible.
  4. Cross checking with other reporting entities to identify missing transactions.
  5. Incomplete reporting of contributions or expenditures as is required by law.

All reporting individuals subject to the random examination are provided an opportunity to explain and correct discrepancies in order to come into voluntary compliance with the law.
